US will take action on Syrian chemical attacks if UN doesn't

Images are being shared on social media conveying humanitarian and political messages in light of the suspected chemical attack in Syria's northern Idlib province on Tuesday.

Trump said the attack was "so horrific" and noted that it had killed "innocent people, small children and even handsome little babies".

The U.N. Security Council plans an emergency session midday Wednesday on the attack. But China's Ambassador Liu Jieyi, in a rare diplomatic outburst, said the United Kingdom delegate should stop "abusing" the Security Council.

Casey and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY say Trump is being undermined by the cloud of an ongoing investigation into possible Russian interference in the election.

As Trump and other world leaders scrambled for a response, the US was working to lock down details proving Assad's culpability. Tuesday, the White House press secretary didn't outline any punitive steps in response to an attack the administration says was carried out by the Assad regime.

Here is a timeline of events related to chemical weapons use in Syria.

Trump said he would not preview any potential US military action, but strongly suggested he would consider punishing the Assad regime for the attack in Idlib province, which US, British and French officials say came from Assad's air force.

When Assad carried out an attack in August 2013, the Obama administration instead went on agree to a plan with Russian Federation for global monitors to destroy weapon stockpiles in Syria. Russia's Defense Ministry said the toxic agents were released when a Syrian airstrike hit a rebel arsenal, an account Britain dismissed at an emergency United Nations session called in response to the attack.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said at least 160 people suffered the effects of the gas, with medical sources reporting incidents of vomiting, fainting, breathing problems and foaming at the mouth.

"Eight patients showed symptoms - including constricted pupils, muscle spasms and involuntary defecation - which are consistent with exposure to a neurotoxic agent such as sarin gas or similar compounds", MSF said in a statement. Rescue workers hose down the limp bodies of small children, trying to wash away chemicals. Makeshift hospitals soon crowded with people suffocating, they said.

While it is still dominated by that (gambling), there is a lot of entertainment going on there, including political conventions. Murphy added: "The league has done some preliminary analysis and I'm anxious to see some of their more final thoughts on it".

- March 19, 2013: The Syrian government and opposition trade accusations over a gas attack that killed some 26 people, including more than a dozen government soldiers, in the town of Khan al-Assal in northern Syria.

The Tahrir al-Sham rebel alliance, which includes Al-Qaeda's former affiliate, the Fateh al-Sham Front, vowed to avenge the deaths, calling on fighters to "ignite the fronts".

The United States and Russian Federation are trading conflicting assertions about who launched a chemical weapons attack in Syria that killed 72 people.

The surrender of the weapons material was considered one of the few diplomatic wins for the Obama administration, which struggled to respond to the Syria crisis.

"President Obama said in 2012 that he would establish a "red line" against the use of chemical weapons and then did nothing".

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called the attack a "moment of truth" that must be investigated.

"I think all of the deaths in Syria are incredibly tragic", Hersman said.

"We have every indication that this was a sustained attack using aircraft over a number of hours", Rycroft said.

Johnson spoke at the start of the Brussels conference, where the U.N., European Union and world financial institutions were seeking billions of dollars in aid for the war-ravaged nation.

Over half Syria's population has been displaced internally and overseas since the conflict began, with regional neighbours hosting most of those who have become refugees.
