Karlsson leads Senators past Rangers into East finals

Can the Ottawa Senators advance to the conference finals when they hit the road to face the New York Rangers tonight at 7:30 PM ET in Game 6?

For New York's effort, center Chris Kreider scored his third goal of the series while Mika Zibanejad picked up his first.

The Senators wasted little time in overtime and Kyle Turris scored 6:28 into the extra period to give the Senators the series lead and one victory away from the 2017 Eastern Conference Championship.

Kreider's third of the playoffs 53 seconds into the third cut the Senators' lead to 3-2. Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored an empty-net goal with seven seconds left to ice the game. After the Rangers did pump life back in, cutting their deficit to 2-1 in the second period, Karlsson ripped a shot past Henrik Lundqvist-a shot that proved decisive in sending the Rangers into the summer.

Because while the Rangers have won nine playoff series and 46 post-season games over the run that began in 2012 and produced that one 2014 trip to the Cup final that seems long ago, this group could never win it all for the franchise that has raised the chalice only once since 1940. Their series is headed to Game 7 on Wednesday night. NY is in an incredibly hard division with a roster that has an aging defense, no true-blue offensive stars and very little in the way of top prospects coming their way. Sometimes it's not about playing your best game.

"That's the only thing right now that we can control, and that's what we need to focus on for Tuesday's game". After picking up just two points in the first seven games of the playoffs, Stone has accumulated three points in his last two contests.

After two forgettable performances in Games 3 and 4 in NY, the Sens would need a bounceback game at home to recapture the series lead.

Fans back in Canada's capital are of course thrilled about the victory, but for one group of fans, they didn't go overboard celebrating - no breaking the law for these people.

At the start of his team's series with the New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher joked that his team was motivated by the fear of getting swept by their favored opponents.

Thomas scores 53, Celtics beat Wizards 129-119 in OT
The Celtics star says his sister, who died in a auto crash two weeks ago, helped him as he scored 53 points against the Wizards. And despite leading 87-75 with 4 minutes left, Washington led by only 5 going into the fourth quarter. "I'm playing tomorrow.

"They had chances and a lot of them", forward Mark Stone said. Whatever got past the defense was stopped by Anderson.

"That's what special players do", Stone said of Karlsson.

This was a could have, should have series for the Blueshirts, who had held the lead for 179 minutes 46 seconds through the first five games and had trailed for only 13:10. And as Ryan McDonagh said earlier Tuesday, "Experience can only go so far". Coming off an overtime win at home in Game 5, one that wasn't much different than the overtime win they had in Game 2 before the series shifted to NY, the Senators took command at the start and never let go. We can make valid arguments why AV, Stepan, Hayes, Nash, Miller, Staal, Girardi and Holden all should go. The players dressed in different stalls, perhaps in a bid to change their fortunes.

How it happened: For the first time in the series, Ottawa struck first, less than five minutes in, courtesy of Mike Hoffman. The goal came following a fantastic penalty kill by NY.

The Senators now wait to find out who they will play in the next round.

"You can not quit believing in any situation", Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said.

Karlsson recorded a goal, an assist, and three shots on goal in Game 6 to lead the way. Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault has cost his team once again. "Maybe the guys didn't know the goaltender was coming (out), but there was less than two minutes (to play) and (Ottawa) was down by a goal so they should expect it but maybe the guys got caught not knowing the goalie was out".

"We had a lot of chances that I think we let slip through our fingers", NY centre Derek Stepan said.
