Tamim century lifts Bangladesh to 305-6 against England

Chasing 306 to win the Three Lions romped with 16 balls to spare. However, from then on in it was plain sailing for the hosts as partnerships of 159 between Alex Hales and Joe Root and then 143 between Root and captain Eoin Morgan saw the hosts home comfortably.

Root struck his 10th hundred as England gunned down Bangladesh's 305/6.

He had played 41 of England's previous 44 one-day internationals leading up to the Champions Trophy, so it was unusual when Eoin Morgan said they had made a horses-for-courses choice.

"We should have done better than we did but a 2-1 series over South Africa, we'll take that every day".

Morgan hadn't changed his mind after Roy's latest failure.

He will be a slight fitness doubt for Tuesday's game against New Zealand after sustaining an ankle injury during his innings, but this was the flawless start for England ahead of matches with the Black Caps and Australia.

Plunkett added Sabbir Rahman's wicket in the last over to finish with a team-best 4-59.

Cavs try to shake 'weird' loss
When a local radio host asked him a rather innocuous question, James responded with: "You only ask questions when we lose". James was eager to break down film of the game on Monday, but he was able to recall much of what Boston did right.

Opener Alex Hales also starred with the bat as he played a knock of 95 runs off just 86 balls besides sharing a pivotal 158-run stand with Root before falling victim to Sabbir Rahman's delivery.

The right-handed batsman's match-winning century ensured Tamim Iqbal's calm and composed ODI century for Bangladesh went in vain.

Meanwhile Root moved to allay fears over his fitness after he suffered cramp in his calf while batting.

The Yorkshireman had converted just one of his previous ten ODI innings. This time they could win and the sense is of a team that is still starting out.

The Bangladeshi batsmen took a liking to Jake Ball (1-82) and the seamer, a surprise inclusion ahead of leg-spinner Adil Rashid, leaked runs all too readily.

England, who came into this tournament featuring the world´s top eight ODI sides as one of the favourites after making huge strides in white-ball cricket in the last two years, were given plenty to think about after skipper Eoin Morgan opted to field despite sunny skies promising good batting conditions. He combined for 166 with Mushfiqur Rahim, who was out for 79 straight after Tamim departed. Stokes and Tamim were involved in a verbal altercation as tempers frayed in the sunshine but the lefthander reached his century off 124 balls, including two sixes and 11fours. Then Tamim and Mushfiqur took over but when both fell to Plunkett in the 45th over, England regained the momentum - and they never let it slip from their grasp.

Woakes began with a maiden after England chose to give Bangladesh first use of a very good pitch on a glorious morning, but he was out of the equation all too quickly with a side strain which inevitably casts doubt over whether he will be fit to bowl again over the next two-and-a-half weeks.
