Trump Makes Luther Strange Endorsement Official

With final election numbers still streaming in at press time Tuesday night, Alabama Sen. Then-Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley appointed his state Attorney General, Luther Strange, to fill Sessions seat and, upon Sessions' confirmation, Strange took office - under a cloud of controversy surrounding an investigation of Bentley's alleged wrongdoing in office.

Other Republicans in the race include state Sen.

GIGI DOUBAN, BYLINE: Hi there.

Former Attorney General of Alabama Luther Strange has been praised by conservatives for his support of crackdowns on undocumented immigrants. Usually being the incumbent gives a candidate a leg up. Typically, about 30 percent of eligible voters show up for primaries but this primary had only one race, which tends to lower the turnout. He was appointed when Sessions left. Odd rejects any suggestion that he took the appointment from Bentley on the expectation of curbing an investigation of the governor, who was under threat of impeachment. Robert Bentley, who later resigned in disgrace after a sex scandal.

Known as "Big Luther" for his 6-foot-9-inch height, unusual was hampered politically by suspicion of impropriety surrounding his February appointment to the Senate by then-Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R).

"The challenge is that I'm playing retail politics - meeting with dozens of voters at a time, maybe hundreds - while Luther Strange and the K Street lobbyists are defaming myself and Roy Moore, hundreds of thousands of voters at a time".

Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala.is interviewed on Capitol Hill in Washington. In their final TV spots, Brooks displays an August 10 tweet in which Trump blamed McConnell for the failure of the Affordable Care Act repeal push; Moore's spot says flatly that McConnell's Republicans "lied about repealing ObamaCare".

SIEGEL: I assume they would dismount to actually cast their ballots. "I was in Washington for the inauguration, and you should have seen the destruction they caused". "You know, I wouldn't think I would support Mitch McConnell".

DOUBAN: He is. He's the state's chief justice.

Alabama's judicial discipline panel removed Moore as chief justice in 2003 for disobeying a federal judge's order to remove a boulder-sized Ten Commandments monument from the state courthouse. Brooks got the support of big-name conservatives including Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter. The most damaging spots have played back year-old footage of Brooks, then a supporter of Sen. They have gone after Brooks with a blitz of controversial ads that have slammed him for opposing Trump in the early days of the presidential primary and connected him to Nancy Pelosi. Moore told the crowd, filled nearly exclusively with elderly white people, that the military had become "too weak" and had to be rebuilt. So it's been said that all three of the top three GOP contenders each have their own baggage that they're bringing to this race. Dean Heller, face primary challengers who will try to use the McConnell-aligned groups' spending - and the emerging wedge between McConnell and Trump - against the incumbents.

Trump's support for unusual didn't matter to him, he said.

Smith, the first congressman to donate to Trump, told AL.com that he rarely makes primary endorsements but saw strong similarities between Brooks' and the president's platforms.

While Trump remains popular in Alabama, Strange might be hampered by the endorsement of an unpopular establishment Republican - Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. But to the surprise of many conservatives here, Trump is not only passing on the opportunity to hurt McConnell's preferred candidate - he's going out of his way to actively help him.

The Democratic side is also crowded but has escaped most of the drama of the bitter GOP race. Who's running in that one? The special election was prompted by the confirmation of former senator Jeff Sessions as attorney general in February.

But, according to Business Insider, the support from McConnell, who is "an unpopular establishment Republican" might hinder his chances.

Neither candidate captured more than 50 percent of the vote required for an outright victory.

Public polling has suggested that the frustration will leave unusual well short of the 50 percent he needs to avoid a runoff. Jones will face the victor of the GOP race in the December 12 special general election.

"I predict President Trump's endorsement will be incredibly important because people want his agenda passed", odd said to Fox on primary election day.

DOUBAN: Great to be with you.
