Uber Picks New CEO, Expedia's Dara Khosrowshahi

According to Tech Crunch, a person to take over CEO role is Dara Khosrowshahi, former CEO of Expedia. Khosrowshahi is expected to agree but nothing has been officially confirmed so far. Several controversies about Uber made the headlines in the last eight months including sexual harassment and discrimination allegations against the ride-share giant that led to the resignation of the former CEO, according to Forbes.

The soon-to-be-announced new CEO has been the chief executive at Expedia since 2005, and he has grown that company into an worldwide travel giant. Khosrowshahi, who has been president and chief executive of Expedia since 2005, was one of three candidates the board was considering, the newspaper reported, citing anonymous sources. He supported Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with a donation past year, though he has also donated to some Republicans. Expedia grew from $15 billion in bookings to a whopping $72 billion past year. The company posted $2.6 billion in revenue in the second quarter, up 18 percent, boosted by strong results from its Hotels.com and HomeAway operations.

Like at Expedia, Khosrowshahi's task is to turn unsold space - whether it's an empty hotel room or an extra auto seat - into revenue.

Uber's board reportedly chose Expedia CEO over former General Electric chairman Jeff Immelt and Hewlett Packard Enterprise chief executive Meg Whitman.

Protesters gather in Manhattan for Trump's visit
They're carrying American flags and signs with such messages as "Trump is president" and "now is not the time for divisiveness". An inflatable Trump-rat also showed up for the protest .

Khosrowshahi also must bring together a messy culture that an outside law firm found was rampant with sexual harassment and bullying of employees. Co-founder Travis Kalanick resigned under pressure in June, though he remains on the company's board. In a DE legal filing, Kalanick called the suit a "personal attack" and said that the investment firm had put pressure on him during a time when he was still dealing with the death of his mother. Even with Uber's business growing and on a path toward a possible initial public offering, Khosrowshahi will have to disentangle the company's workplace culture, legal challenges and regulatory scrutiny. "I am focused on growth". "We're about people wanting to go on vacations; we're not necessarily about couch surfing".

Khosrowshahi is not oblivious to the transportation industry as he has been heading a travel company itself. His only references to Uber on Twitter have been about Convoy, and also this 2015 tweet. It started when protests sprung up around the United States in response to Donald Trump's executive order banning refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries. Or more specifically, who's next?

In New Zealand, Uber has had mixed fortunes recently. The online booking site is one of the largest travel agencies in the world.

For the record, it's pronounced "cause-row-shaw-hee".
