At least 44 buildings collapsed completely in Mexico City, according to official figures, with thousands left damaged and unstable in the sprawling city, which is built on a drained lake bed. Eleven children were rescued from the school, 19 children and six adults there were killed. The efforts were shown live on television.

On Wednesday, rescue workers said they believed they'd made contact with a child trapped in the rubble at the Enrique Rebsamen school.

5.8-magnitude tremor strikes Mexico

Officials say the total death toll is now 273, and the mayor of Mexico City says 50 people are still unaccounted for. The Mexican military said 115 people had been pulled alive from the rubble.

At least 25 bodies have been recovered: a lot of them children.

Eleven children have been rescued so far from the debris of the building and rescuers continue their efforts to try and rescue more trapped people. Even on social media, people expressed hope and optimism bearing the hashtag #FridaSofia.

At least eight other died in The State of Mexico, which also borders the capital said by Gov. Alfredo del Mazo.
