Bernie Sanders in Flagstaff: Arizona is a 'battleground state'

The next Hillary Clinton surrogate to hit Arizona will be the candidate's daughter, Chelsea, who will speak Wednesday afternoon on Arizona State's Tempe campus.

Bernie Sanders stumped to over 5,000 people on the UA Mall for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, calling on supporters to elect her president this November.

Sanders told supporters to ignore the media when they say big economic and social change is not possible. Yet since Bill Clinton's victory in 1996, the state hasn't been close.

"Arizona is a battleground state", Sanders told the cheering Tucson crowd. It is definitely an intense one, really debating the future of our city and of our state so it's a typical but not shocking that it could get elevated to that level.

The 2016 election has been a rollercoaster ride, with "political revolutions" from left-wing candidates like Bernie Sanders and 22 GOP candidates announcing their bids for the White House.

In a 40-minute speech, Sanders also discussed the economy and the plight of the middle class.

"We have got to take people out of the shadows", he said. "Secretary Clinton understands that".

On climate change, Sanders said that scientists "from all over the world" say "in a unanimous voice that climate change is real, it is a threat to our country and it is already doing devastation to the world".

"Ask your friends why they think the Koch brothers are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the election", Sanders said. "On Nov. 9, we've got to work to transform this country".

Ryan plugs GOP campaign agenda, but no mention of Trump
A poll released Thursday - conducted both before and after she withdrew her Trump support - showed a tied race. Now, Trump's last chance to redefine himself in front of a national audience could come in Wednesday's debate.

Landon Andreas said he certainly noticed when Clinton drifted toward Sanders' opinions opposing the Trans Pacific Partnership and supporting an increase in the minimum wage. "And the day after that, I and the progressive members of Congress, and hopefully millions of other people will say, President-elect Clinton, here is the Democratic National platform, it is a progressive document".

"This is not trust, we're not here to trust", he explained. "It is the very opposite of what I am saying".

Finally, on whether he thinks Clinton can accomplish some of the policies that she has adopted from Sanders if she wins the presidency, Weaver said, "It's going to be a hard environment obviously".

Hunter says that since there is a lot of "political crossover" among the policies Sanders and Stein promote, the Green Party could win a lot of votes from Democrats and former Democrats (some Sanders supporters have converted to Green entirely since he lost the Democratic nomination).

Linda Webb, a former Sanders volunteer, said she admires Sanders for sticking by his promise to support the party's nominee.

"I am personally a tad surprised given that Republicans still hold a sizable lead in Arizona", Boyd said. "I have some problems with Hillary's standings".

"Being too intimidated by the cost of education should not determine what your dreams are or your professional pathway", she said.

Sanders joked that he has been traveling around for months talking about a "corrupt tax system" and said Donald Trump managed to educate more people during the debate about the corruption than Sanders could in months.
