But in the end, Carolina needed a secondary, not the NFL MVP, as it had no answer for New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees in Sunday's 41-38 loss to the Saints. Drew Brees completed six of his next seven passes, putting New Orleans in range for Wil Lutz's game-winning 52-yard field goal. Newton completed 27 of 47 passes for 322 yards and two TDs against New Orleans. The loss marks the third time this season the Carolina Panthers have had a game decided by a field goal within the final minute.

By unofficial estimates, that is 59 seconds shorter than his Super Bowl 50 postgame press conference.

Brees appeared to be targeting wide receiver Willie Snead on the play, but Fleener undercut the route and snagged the ball out of the air, running the last 25 yards untouched. Four of the Saints' five games this season have come down to the last possession.

In the second half, the Panthers defense held the Saints to a more respectable 17 points.

There were 10 different players who caught a ball for New Orleans, three of them racked up at least 70 receiving yards and Sanchez, who's still experiencing those growing pains, relinquished a ideal 158.3 passer rating to Brees whenever he was targeted.
