Tech companies plan virtual protest to protect net neutrality

It was part of a coordinated "Day of Action" aimed at convincing the Federal Communications Commission to keep in place current net neutrality regulations, which require internet providers treat all content equally.

Marc Andreessen, an Internet pioneer who co-authored the first widely used web browser and co-founded Netscape, offers a counter-argument that is popular with telecommunication companies.

More than 30 telecoms, including Digicel and Flow, signed on to the CANTO "Voluntary Code of Practice for Safeguarding the Open Internet". The move, which critics charge will fundamentally undermine consumer privacy in the United States, overturned rules drawn up by the FCC that would have given people more control over their personal data.

On Wednesday advocates of present net neutrality rules banded together in what was called a 'Day of Action', with numerous world's biggest websites showing their disdain in the form of banners and pop-ups decrying any changes to present regulations. But in 2015, then-Democrat-majority FCC passed new regulations to enforce net neutrality, setting new kind of oversight for Internet service providers.

Comcast also in support of "permanent, strong, legally enforceable net neutrality rules".

Here's what to know about the proposed rollback as the FCC takes public comments until Monday (responses to other comments are due August 16).

But lawmakers aren't running the net neutrality proceeding as Pai heads toward a vote possibly later this year at the FCC.

"The FCC needs to listen to the public, not just lobbyists from big cable companies", Fight for the Future's campaign director Evan Greer said in a statement.

Internet provider AT&T Inc also joined the big protest even though the wireless giant in the past has disagreed with staunch net neutrality advocates over how to enforce it.

Political pundit John Oliver went to extra lengths by purchasing a web domain linking directly to the FCC's comment submission form for net neutrality.

Alternately, without net neutrality, your ISP could make sites it particularly likes load faster.
