Mega-Hurricane Matthew threatens Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba

Matthew, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recent history, weakened a little on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, as it drenched coastal Colombia and roared across the Caribbean on a course that still puts Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba in the path of potentially devastating winds and rain.

Ocean swells with the potential to cause risky currents and rip tides are also possible over the next two days in coastal regions of Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

As of 11 a.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 390 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, moving west at 6 mph. Parts of Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica are on alert, as Matthew's maximum sustained winds were near 145 miles per hour Saturday. Forecasters say Matthew is expected to turn toward the west-northwest by Saturday night and then toward the northwest on Sunday.

That makes it the strongest Caribbean storm since Hurricane Felix in 2007.

Haiti is bracing for rainfall totals of up to 25 inches and isolated areas up to 40 inches.

"I left work to pick up a few items, candles, tin stuff, bread", 41-year-old Angella Wage said at a crowded store in the Half Way Tree area of the capital.

Bosh fails physical, still unable to return to Heat
If the medical issue keeps Bosh out of action for good, he would be paid the remainder of his contract - three years, $76 million. Chris Bosh released a video statement Friday night. "That's my brother and I look forward to seeing the next chapter".

Ocean swells with the potential to cause risky currents and rip tides are also possible over the next two days in coastal regions of Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. "As a result, right now it's way too early to tell if the state of Florida will see any hurricane impacts from Matthew". The U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is evacuating non-essential personnel. "Hurricane hunters are going to be flying in and out of Matthew for days to come".

IBC Airways has canceled all flights Monday to and from the USA naval station at Guantanamo Bay because of the approaching storm, the naval station said via Twitter.

Hurricane Matthew weakened as it churned across the Caribbean - threatening Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti and the Bahamas. Heavy flooding was reported and authorities say at least one person was swept away by a flash flood in a region that has not experienced rainfall in four years.

Matthew is also forecast to skim past the southern coast of Haiti on Monday and officials said preparation efforts were focused in the south.

According to the Washington Post, the last major hurricane to make landfall in the US was Hurricane Wilma in 2005, which struck Florida. The storm may make landfall by Monday. As per Accuweather, the hurricane is bringing floods, powerful winds and a storm surge early next week. Still, Matthew is forecast to move across eastern Jamaica as a category 3 storm with 120 miles per hour winds. But he urged people to use it to prepare and buy supplies.
