Charlize Theron outshines the rest of Atomic Blonde

Leitch, who co-directed the 2014 smash John Wick, has his film resemble a music video.

This is not quite so in "Atomic Blonde", a post-war thriller set in the final moments of the Cold War (1989 Berlin) starring Charlize Theron as the MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton.

Charlize Theron is already one of the most handsome and acclaimed actresses on the planet - so it's only natural she adds "badass action star" to her resume, alongside "Oscar victor".

"Atomic Blonde" (rated R for sequences of strong violence, language throughout, and some sexuality/nudity) has flaws but in the end it still delivers a great fix for action junkies and inspires hope that even a woman in her 40s can be the lead in an action movie.

"Atomic #Blonde" starring Charlize Theron is one of this month's most-awaited movies. Technically, it's his first film in which he is actually being credited (he is uncredited for his work on the first John Wick). She fixes herself a vodka rocks and gazes at a photograph of her and the man we've just seen die, a snapshot she then burns. So that started to kick it to another direction.

And, heaven knows, there is a lot of kicking. Not as much as some, but more than most.

He's fine, but we've seen him do this "roguish British sleazebag" routine plenty of times before.

These thugs are cliched bozos, one after another straight out of central casting, in a film that doesn't so much feature characters but rather archetypes of characters.

There is East Germany and West Germany and Lorraine and Percival must navigate between the two.

In the movie it's a city on the edge of either complete anarchy or transcending itself. Theron's decision to play Lorraine as a hardened operative renders her into a distant killing machine.

You may not entirely understand every twist and turn that got you there, but you'll should enjoy the ride. There's a juxtaposition between the wall and them but also sort of this bigger metaphor that they're all on the edge of collapsing.

Still, when Atomic Blonde isn't going through the motions, it does score a few points - for the aforementioned soundtrack, but also the frank lesbian relationship between Theron and a French spy, played by Sofia Boutella (The Mummy). In many of them, director David Leitch creates the illusion that we're seeing the action in long, uninterrupted takes, in which Lorraine and whoever's head she is busting move and bleed according to ultra-precise choreography. It's a very different situation. I would absolutely do it. Every visual element contributes to defining the characters and moving the story forward, while still looking effortlessly cool. It's not that I have a great affection for James (he's okay).

One of the good ones. I think about it, like, once a week. There's no "I've never been with..." exchange, no discussion of the specifics of either woman's orientation or any indication period that we're meant to see it as at all unexpected or unusual that these two people would hook up. How do we make it realistic? Take, for instance, a scene in which Lorraine makes mincemeat of a Russian henchman's face behind the screen of a movie theater playing Andrei Tarkovsky's "Stalker".

Taking place in the days prior to the crumbling of the Berlin Wall, the film follows Lorraine (Charlize Theron), who refuses to trust anyone while able to match brains and brawn with just about any of the male adversaries she encounters. It's definitely a film that fans of the genre want to check out, and leaves plenty of room for Lorraine Broughton to step into a wider franchise space, once reserved for the Bourne's and Bond's of the genre.

We're nearly out of time, so I'm obligated to ask you about Deadpool 2. Give it a shot and I'm sure you'll be delighted by its insanity... Thankfully, some of the supporting cast are fun, too.
