PM Modi to hold talks with Myanmar President Htin Kyaw today

The first high-level contact after Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) took over saw Modi assuring Myanmar President Htin Kyaw that India will remain a reliable partner in pursuing security and development goals.

Both sides recognise their security interests are closely aligned. In this context, both sides agreed that the delegations of India and Myanmar will continue to work together closely during deliberations in all relevant United Nations fora, the statement added. "And, actively cooperate to combat the common challenges of terrorism and insurgent activity in our region", he added.

However, while pledging efforts against violent rebels, the joint statement promised to uphold territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

As Myanmar delicately balanced its relations with its two giant neighbours during the first overseas visit of President U Htin Kyaw to India, both countries stressed the need to respect each other's "sovereignty and territorial integrity" and reiterated that insurgent groups will not be allowed use their soil "for hostile activities against the other side".

"We are also ready to restore other historic monuments and pagodas, which were damaged in the quake which hit Myanmar just last week", he said.

According to K. Yhome, Research Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation think tank and the author of "Myanmar: Can the Generals Resist Change?", Suu Kyi's visit was aimed at balancing ties with the new government trying to reduce its dependence on China. His meeting with Modi was followed by signing of four MoUs, including one for construction of 69 bridges by India on a proposed trilateral highway that would link the country with Thailand through Myanmar and another for construction and improvement of Kalewa-Yagyi road in Myanmar.

Brathwaite's outfit includes the likes of flamboyant opener Chris Gayle, allrounder AndrÈ Russell , and spinner Sunil Narine. He had reason to just hope: 20 of the 39 previous overs had been taken for at least a boundary in the first two balls.

"The two sides agreed that Maritime Security Cooperation in the Bay of Bengal is vital for them", said a statement issued by the Indian Union government in New Delhi.

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Myanmar on Tuesday that the world is very concerned about the tens of thousands of Rohingya Muslim refugees who have been living for more than four years in camps in northern Rakhine state after fleeing violence from the Buddhist majority.

President Kyaw comes to India at the invitation of the Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee, who will be hosting a banquet in honor of the visiting leader and his delegation.

The advisory commission will hold meetings with all relevant stakeholders, worldwide experts, and foreign dignitaries, submit its findings and recommendations to the Myanmar government, and publish a report next year. Not only do India and Myanmar have a shared border but the two countries are also home to millions of people from the same ethnic community, separated during the creation of India and Myanmar in 1947 and 1948 respectively.

Despite being neighbors, India's total investment in Burma was just over US$224 million during the 2015-2016 fiscal year-significantly lower than the investments of other regional countries, like China.

The ANP sent a letter to the Myanmar government on August 25, objecting to the appointment of three foreigners to the advisory commission and calling for it to be disbanded. And after supplying power to Tamu, India was willing to "substantially scale up" the supply of power to Myanmar, he said. He said they had also agreed to work towards a long-term and a mutually beneficial arrangement for trade in pulses.
