Samsung Galaxy Note 7 officially recalled

But owners are ignoring the warnings, refusing to give up the phones.

Since then, Samsung has been scrambling to recall and replace 2.5 million Note 7s it had already sold.

Samsung may have gotten the ball rolling early with a self-imposed replacement program, but the US government on Thursday made it official: the company's Galaxy Note 7 smartphone is recalled.

If you have the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone, stop using it immediately and take it back.

The recall has been formally filed with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for any Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones sold before September 15, 2016. Contact the wireless carrier, retail outlet or Samsung.com where you purchased your device to receive free of charge a new Galaxy Note7 with a different battery, a refund or a new replacement device.

The world's largest smartphone maker halted the global rollout of its new phone on September 2 after reports of the devices catching fire.

Earlier this month, Samsung said it would recall all Note 7 smartphones equipped with batteries it found to be fire-prone and halted their sales in 10 markets, denting a revival of the firm's mobile business. Ever since the company officially announced the recall for Note 7, consumers are eagerly waiting for the recall day to arrive, but yet no official date has been published by the company. According to Samsung, the recall could cost the company as much as $1 billion. The new Note 7 will be in most stores no later than September 21, Samsung said Thursday.

The recall comes at a crucial time as rival Apple has just released its new iPhone 7.

The company had received complaints from consumers who said their phones' battery had overheated and even caught fire while charging.

Samsung's statements left many customers confused, said Tuong Nguyen, a tech industry analyst with Gartner, "and that might have an impact on overall consumer confidence, especially since we're talking about a high-end device, their flagship phone". The device was also deemed a flight hazard by various government authorities who ordered airline passengers not to bring their Note 7s on planes unless they keep them turned off during the flight.
